Which abaya fabric is best for summer? Linen, jersey and crepe compared

An abaya is a long, layered garment, so in summer the fabric does all the work. The same cut can feel like a breeze or like a tent depending on what it is made from. Here is how the three most common choices behave once the temperature climbs.

Linen: the summer fabric

Linen fibres are hollow, so the cloth pulls moisture away from the skin and dries fast. It is the most breathable option on this list and the one that gets softer with every wash. The trade off is that pure linen creases, which is why many summer abayas use a linen blend. Our Linen Set is a 70 percent rayon, 30 percent linen blend: the linen keeps it cool, the rayon gives it drape and keeps the creasing down. It is woven dense enough that it never turns sheer in direct sun, which is the usual worry with light fabrics.

Jersey: soft, but it holds heat

Jersey is a knit, so it stretches and feels soft against the skin. It is excellent for hijabs, where it stays put without pins, but as a full abaya it clings in humidity and does not let air move the way a woven cloth does. Keep jersey for the scarf and choose a woven fabric for the abaya.

Crepe and nida: polished, less breathable

Crepe and nida are polyester based. They drape beautifully, resist creases and photograph well, which is why they dominate occasion wear. They are also the warmest of the three, because polyester does not absorb moisture. Fine for an evening in air conditioning, less so for a day outside.

Colour matters as much as cloth

Black absorbs heat. If you are buying one abaya for the warm months, a lighter shade like Oat or a muted Olive stays noticeably cooler in the sun than the same garment in black.

What to look for

  • A woven fabric with linen or cotton in it
  • An open front, so air moves while you walk
  • Wide sleeves rather than fitted cuffs
  • A matching inner dress in the same light cloth, not a heavier underlayer

That is the thinking behind the Linen Set: an open abaya, an inner dress and a hijab, all cut from the same breathable cloth, in three colours and sizes S to L/XL.
